Latest News: KENSINGTON GARDENS BEHIND THE SCENES (ISBN 9780955665936) is finally finished and will be in all good bookshops, 1 May 2023
In this new book which has taken years to complete you will see Kensington Gardens the much-loved royal park in London, as it looked a hundred years ago in more than 200 images from beautiful Edwardian postcards. Every image is a small work of art from the era that made photography accessible to everyone for the price of a postcard.
I love the idea that we have a chance to see the past through the eyes of someone who lived a hundred years ago, and to share a moment of their lives, just because they decided to send a message to a loved one on the back of a postcard. A fragile postcard which is easily thrown away or ruined but which has survived. A card which may have been treasured and kept in an album and then passed from generation to generation, or perhaps found in the bottom of a drawer, or hidden away in an attic, only to be found a century later.
In this new book, I decipher handwritten messages on the backs of some of the postcards and through research into family history, examining local directories and census returns, discover the stories - local and international - behind the scenes.
With this visual tour, I thought I would piece together images taken by different photographers of the time to be more immersed in the past, wandering from view to view, to stand where they stood, but a hundred years later. This is the closest I could manage to offering time travel!
I hope you enjoy the books. I will keep updating this page as we go.
Have a lovely day,
All best, Hermione
And here are some we prepared earlier ...
